Stokke Tripp Trapp High Chair

Tripp Trapp High Chair

Mealtimes are an opportunity for family bonding at every stage of development. But there's a reason why it's difficult to keep kids at the table for any length of time. Look back over human evolution and you'll realize that we are not natural sitters. Our ancestors were constantly on the go, walking, lifting, running, climbing. It's only within the past several hundred years that we've trained ourselves to sit for long periods of time. For children, this does not come easily.

Just as ergonomics are critical for adults who spend their days sitting at a computer, finding the right chair for your child is very important. There are a lot of options on the market, but the Tripp Trapp chair is the only one that was designed with all of these principals in mind.

In 1972, Norwegian designer Peter Opsevik searched for a chair that would allow his two-year-old son to sit naturally and comfortably at the family table. Failing to find a solution, he developed the design that served as the prototype for the Stokke Tripp Trapp chair. He realized that there were two key issues to address: seat height and foot support. People are most comfortable when they are seated so that their elbows are level with the tabletop and their feet rest comfortably on the floor. With an adjustable seat and footrest, the Tripp Trapp can be adjusted to create this ideal scenario for anyone, from infant to adult.

The Tripp Trapp chair is virtually tip-proof, a feature that is meant to encourage children to climb into and out of the seat themselves. Not only does this foster independence from an early age, it also allows children to reposition themselves frequently, which will help them ultimately stay at the table for longer periods of time. This is an added bonus for pregnant moms who can't lift toddlers into a high chair or booster. Kids can even buckle themselves in, but you'll be glad to know they usually cannot unbuckle themselves, as the mechanism requires more pressure than most kids can exert.

Babies may use the Tripp Trapp as soon as they can sit unassisted (about six to eight months), using the attached 5-point harness and the optional Baby Rail attachment. The Tripp Trapp does not offer the option of a tray, which allows the baby to sit right at the table, just like the rest of the family. At about 18 months of age the rail is no longer necessary, though you'll still want to use the safety harness. The harness can be removed for use with older children and adults.

The Tripp Trapp is made of strong cultivated beech. The wood is deeply stained, providing a rich color that doesn't chip. There's a wide array of colors, from natural wood stains like cherry and rosewood to vibrant orange and lime. There's even an untreated version that you can custom finish on your own. It is easy to wipe clean with a damp cloth, since there are few joints and the pieces fit very flush, leaving few places for food to get trapped. The Tripp Trapp is simple to assemble, and comes with own Allen wrench. The bolts must all be loosened and then retightened for adjustments, so keep the wrench handy.
